Annual Report 2009 of the
South-American Regional Committee on Paleogene Stratigraphy
This year was dedicated to the organization of a symposium on the Paleogene of South and Central America and the Caribbean, to be held at the X Argentinean Congress of Paleontology and Biostratigraphy and VII Latin American Congress of Paleontology (La Plata, Argentina, 20-24th September, 2010). The aim of the symposium is to have an overview of research related to the Paleogene of South and Central America, and to provide an opportunity for the meeting of members of the Regional Committee to discuss current activities and working plans for 2011-2012. The web page for the Regional Committee (http://striweb.si.edu/jaramillo/committee/index.html) has been maintained and actualized, including news, research activities and a list of recent publications concerning the Paleogene of South and Central America.

Annual Report 2008 of the
South-American Regional Committee on Paleogene Stratigraphy
In this period, N. Malumian, chairman of the SARCPS since
its creation in 1991, has stepped down. He was replaced by Carlos
Jaramillo, continuing Carolina Náñez as secretary.
In this transitional year, a web page for the Regional Committee
was prepared and is now available at http://striweb.si.edu/jaramillo/committee/index.html;
this page will report on the activities of the Committee and news
of interest for researchers working on Paleogene stratigraphy,
and it already has a list of recent publications concerning the
Paleogene of South and Central America.
Also, a number of colleagues from different countries and specialties
were invited to participate in the Regional Committee, including
Tania Lindner Dutra from Brazil, Luis Felipe Hinojosa from Chile,
German Bayona from Colombia, Teresita Aguilar from Costa Rica,
Manuel Iturralde-Vinent from Cuba, Enrique Martínez-Hernández
from Mexico, Sara Morón from Panama and Javier Jacay from
Peru. A regional meeting is being planned in Argentina in 2010,
to gather our collaborators for a discussion on the advances of
the stratigraphy of the Paleogene in South and Central America.

Annual Report 2007 of South American Regional Committee on Paleogene
Stratigraphy
The South American Regional Committee on Paleogene Stratigraphy
sponsored the Fifth Argentinean Ichnologic Meeting and Third Ichnologic
Meeting of the Mercosur, held on March 28-30 (2007) in Ushuaia,
Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, organized by the Laboratorio de Geología
Andina (chairman: Dr. E. Olivero). During the meeting, several
papers on Paleogene ichnology were presented, particularly a symposium
was held on the evolution of the terrestrial ichnofauna of central
Patagonia, coordinated by J. Genise. The marine Paleogene outcrops
on the Atlantic Coast of the Tierra del Fuego Island were visited
in a three-day post-meeting field trip.
Reported research on the Paleogene reflects activity mainly in
Antarctica, Argentina and Colombia. In Argentina, research to
identify series and stages boundaries and events is continuously
carried on, sometimes with difficulty due to the absence or scarcity
of index fossils.

and C. Nañez, Secretary.
The Paleogene of Tierra del Fuego Island and the adjacent
continental shelf:
The stratigraphy of the Paleogene of Tierra del Fuego has been
intensively studied since the last decade, mainly by E. Olivero
(CADIC, National Research Council, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego)
and N. Malumián (Geological Survey of Argentina) and their
team. This year the geological map of Tierra del Fuego has been
finished and edited, involving an important advance in the knowledge
of the geology and stratigraphy of the Paleogene of the island
and the adjacent continental shelf. It is a subject of economic
significance as the area is explored for oil purposes.
In February 2004, the South American Regional Committee on Paleogene
Stratigraphy, E. Olivero, director of CADIC (National Research
Council at Ushuaia), colleagues of Pan American Energy Argentina
and the present chairman of the ISPS, E. Molina, organized a field
trip to visit several localities of the Paleogene of Tierra del
Fuego, one of the most complete successions of marine Paleogene
in Argentina. Several localities were visited, including sections
that encompass the Paleocene/Eocene boundary, Lower/Middle Eocene
boundary, Eocene/Oligocene boundary and Oligocene/Miocene boundary.

For now, sections of the Paleocene and Early Eocene have been
sampled, and the study of the foraminifera was initiated.
Samples with topotypes of Globorotalia bolivariana (Petters) were
sent to W. Berggren and R. Olsson for the Atlas of Eocene Planktonic
Foraminifera. Radiolaria are being studied by Annika Sanfilippo,
and samples for radimetric dating on glauconite are being analyzed
in Australia. The Paleocene and Early Eocene from this region
had been only routinely studied and the joint work with ECOPETROL
will provide very good biostratigraphic and micropaleontological
data on the Paleogene of this northern area of South America,
of important paleoceanographic significance.
A synthesis on the Paleogene of Colombia by Duque Caro is nearly
finished and ready for publication.
